Recent and Ongoing Projects
‘The Secret Gardeners’ – A Community Gardening Project at the Brunswick Healthy Living Centre, Leamington Spa
This began as a pilot project in Feb 2006 to create a new summer garden at the community centre.
Pam’s role within this project has been to co-ordinate the Volunteer Gardening Team in weekly gardening activities, and to initiate volunteer involvement in the planning and development of the project. Pam has also created a ‘Tool Box’ or manual for the project - a guide which outlines how to develop and deliver a programme of gardening related activities at the centre. This work feeds into the overall development of the volunteer programme at the centre, with the inclusion of a number of check lists and information sheets which will help volunteers to manage the project in the future.
Warwick Words Writer’s Group
Funded as part of the Warwick Words festival of literature and spoken word, Pam has lead the way in establishing this new group. She has co-ordinated the group over the last 12 months, facilitating meetings and managing the programme of activities, including co-ordinating ‘The Best of… Warwick Words Writers Group’ event – a selection of work presented to a packed audience during the 2007 Warwick Words festival programme (between 4- 7 October).
This dynamic and friendly group meet in Warwick once a month to share their work, discuss ideas and to develop their creative writing skills. The format of the monthly sessions is determined by the group itself, with the emphasis being on creating an informal, yet supportive and productive network.
What members say about the Warwick Words Writers Group:
“refreshing” and “stimulating”, it “attracts a wide range of people with different levels of writing skills and styles”.
Leamington Spa Canal Festival 2007
Earlier this year, Pam worked with the Canal Festival committee to plan and deliver this community event. Supporting the work of this mostly volunteer group, she also secured funding to deliver two related projects prior to the festival weekend. Pam ran two creative writing workshops which included a walk along the canal. The work produced by the participants was then displayed along the towpath during the weekend of the festival, accompanied by photographs they had also taken. She also worked with the Milan Group for Women to create over 100 metres of bunting to decorate the Clemens Street area. On the day, Pam was responsible for co-ordinating the community stalls and managing the stage and performance area.
Residents and performers thought that the event was “well organised”, “good fun!” and had a “Great atmosphere.”
Creative Writing Workshops
Pam has developed a range of inspiring creative writing workshops for adults, including:
- Getting Started – dealing with the blank page’
- Hidden Stories’ using objects as writing prompts
- ‘Walking Words’ a writing session combined with a walk.
Inspired by everyday objects, images and borrowed stories, the participants explore some simple and practical writing exercises in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Designed to build confidence and get their creative juices flowing, these sessions are both enjoyable and informative.
Some comments from previous participants:
“Absolutely brilliant. From the very first minute I felt at home. The ideas that were born were very exciting.”
Full of “beaming bright creative ideas”, “the last session was as good as the first.”
“I’ve learned that I can write creatively. Pam’s exercises facilitated this process. Thanks!”
“A thoroughly enjoyable and possibly life-changing experience.”
